If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?

Anyone who knows me, or has read this blog regularly, knows how I will answer this question. When we left Prague in September 1993, after living there for five months, I left a piece of my heart there. Ken and I were back for a couple of weeks in 2001, and I realized that my feelings hadn’t changed: Prague is home.

I know we didn’t live there for very long, but the memories are indelible. The city made a huge impression on all of us. Although it’s a large city, it’s compact and very livable. And no one can deny its beauty.

However, I now have another place that I’d consider. Although we’ve visited many beautiful and interesting places in the US and Europe over the past, no place, except for Prague, has captured my soul like Bordeaux. It’s another beautiful city that strikes me as very livable. There is so much beauty and history, but it’s a friendly place, and the pace of life isn’t as frenetic as it is here. Ken and I felt so comfortable there, even with my very rudimentary grasp of the language. I really could see myself living there

On Friday the Tour de France stage will end in Bordeaux, on the quayside. I plan to be watching, and wishing I was there.

It’s a crying shame when sometimes some people get trapped in places where their heart is far away. I’m one of the most fortunate people who changed and made home where my heart followed the one I loved. Married for 50 years.

Perhaps I should have made it clear that I love where I live. My husband and I have been in Florida for 50 years, and in our current home for 37. My feelings for Prague come from the intensity of our experience there. I have heard Jewish friends who have lived/studied in Israel say that, although they are glad to be home, they still have one foot in Israel. That’s how I feel about Prague.
