This Little Piggy

Have you ever broken a bone?

I have never broken one of the “long bones,” as the bones of our arms and legs are known. Twice, however, I’ve broken a toe. The bones may be small, but the pain is not.

The first broken occurred sometime in the mid-1990s. We have a set of folding wooden tv tables. I pulled one from the storage rack to set it up; it slipped, and the top of the table came down on its edge, like the blade of a guillotine, and hit my big toe. I had heard the expression “seeing stars,” but that was the first time I experienced the sensation.

Since the pain kept me from sleeping and didn’t abate, I went to an orthopedist who was a friend from the church we attended. He took a look at my toe and said, “eww, that’s gross!” I asked him if that was a medical opinion 😂 The toe was, indeed, broken; he buddy-taped it to the next toe and gave me a wooden soled surgical shoe to wear for six weeks.

The second surgical shoe

I got a slightly more comfortable shoe when I broke the little toe on my left foot about five years ago. I wish I had as good a story for what happened this time, but it’s much more pedestrian. I stubbed it on the footboard of our bed when I got up in the middle of the night. I did get sympathy from my podiatrist, as she had done the exact same thing a few months earlier.

I hope I’m done with broken bones!

That happened to one of my friends a few months ago, and then suddenly she had them again. The mysteries of the Internet!

Yes, I broke my ankle on the low, front door step. I returned in a hurry to get the boys coats and unbeknown to me we had, had black ice. The pain was so bad I slumped to the ground. The family thought I was laughing. Many had problems that night. A&E was full of us! Thank you for your story!
