It has been a dreary, rainy week here, and we haven’t been able to walk as much as usual. But as we dodged raindrops one morning, I spotted a bit of color in a hedge. Surinam cherries were beginning to ripen. I had to check one of my gardening references to check whether the plant was Surinam cherry or Barbados cherry. I can never remember which is which. What I did discover in the process is that Surinam cherry is considered an invasive plant. When we moved to Florida in the 1970s, this was a common hedge plant. It fell out of favor, and this was the first I’d seen it in a long time. And it brightened an otherwise gray day.
