By now, you know that I love botanical gardens. Ken and I visited a favorite today, Morikami Museum and Gardens, in Delray Beach.

The Morikami gardens have an interesting history. The land was donated to Palm Beach County by George Morikami, a farmer originally from Japan and the last member of the Yamato Colony. This was a group on Japanese men who came to farm pineapples in South Florida in the early 1900s. Economic and plant disease issues resulted in colony’s decline. Eventually, all of the other growers either returned to Japan or moved to other parts of the US. But the museum and gardens celebrate Japanese culture. The gardens are inspired by significant gardens in Japan, but are unique rather than copies of those gardens.

The garden is home to a significant bonsai collection, too.

It had been two years since we visited. I hope we don’t wait that long to return.
