Beach or mountains? Which do you prefer? Why?
Living in South Florida, I take the beach for granted. We don’t go to the beach that often, but it’s always there, and it’s usually a wonderful, relaxing experience. Just today, Ken and I talked about going for a beach walk on our favorite nearby beach and then having lunch at a restaurant nearby which has some of the best seafood around.

Our favorite beach is at Sanibel Island, across the state from us. The residents of the island have protected it from intensive development, so there is a lot of pristine scenery, and usually lots of shore birds. Also, Sanibel is one of the best places in the world for collecting shells.

But I love the mountains, too. Because the terrain here is so flat, and it’s over a day’s drive to get to any mountains, a holiday in the mountains is always special. It usually means a change in the weather, too, which is especially welcome in summer. Our kids always lobbied for mountain vacations. When our son was three, we were in the car and driving up a highway approach ramp when Ben said, “Mommy, Daddy, a hill!” That was the impetus for our first mountain trip with the kids.

One of our favorite things to do is to hike to waterfalls. There are so many beautiful falls in northern Georgia and western North Carolina, and we’ve visited a lot of them.

I love the quiet of the woods, and I also love the vistas.

Bottom line, I love them both. Please don’t make me choose!
