Name the most expensive personal item you’ve ever purchased (not your home or car).
I tend to be pretty frugal when I buy things for myself, but I made one splurge that looks more expensive than it actually was.
A local jeweler was offering “grab bags:” gift bags with stones from jewelry that people had sold for the value of the gold or silver. You just picked a bag from the counter. You couldn’t look inside and choose the one you wanted. There was no obligation to buy anything. I decided to try my luck.
I went in and picked up a bag. There was a gentleman there who did the same. My bag contained a beautiful blue topaz in an emerald cut. His had two small garnets. He tried to convince me to trade, but I was in love with my stone. He took his bag and left.
I had the jeweler set the topaz as a ring, and I wear it frequently. It’s the only time I bought a piece of good jewelry, but it was a fun way to do it, and gave me an interesting story to tell.
