Weekend Work

What have you been working on?

There are lots of ways I could interpret this prompt, but it’s Saturday, and that means I’m working on whatever music I’m singing on Sunday. I may be a volunteer, but I take my work as a church musician very seriously.

According to family lore, I sang my first solo in church when I was four years old, for a Sunday school holiday program. I’m told that I cried afterwards, because nobody applauded. I’d practiced at my grandparent’s house, because we didn’t have a piano then, and my grandfather always clapped when I finished. I didn’t understand why people didn’t do the same in the church.

I’ve sung in choirs, as a soloist/cantor, and directed choirs for what seems like forever. These days, I’m a singer in a small group music ministry and serve on the music committee that advises our music director. I can’t imagine not being involved in music.

The topic of tomorrow’s sermon is listening as a spiritual practice. I’m singing the wonderful “When You Say Nothing At All.” I’ve also been working on harmonies for a group song, “Sitting on a Goldmine.” It should be an interesting service!

I sang in church at 17. I was terrified. I’m 53 now and haven’t again. I love the song you’re singing
