Color Me Crafty

What’s something most people don’t know about you?

An “adult” coloring project

Most people don’t know that I enjoy working on craft projects. It’s not something that I talk about usually, and I have no idea why that is.

Crafting is my “me” time, something I generally do just for myself. I enjoy it as much for the process as the result.

I got started with crafts when I had a long commute for work, most of it on a bus. There was a woman who also rode regularly who worked on counted cross stitch on the bus. We would sit together occasionally, and she encouraged me to give it a try. I did, and I was hooked!

I did cross stitch projects for a long time, until I developed carpal tunnel syndrome. Treatment quickly took care of that problem, but I found I couldn’t stitch without developing pain. That ended that.

I tried scrapbooking, but I found myself buying supplies and then not doing anything with them. Scratch that idea!

Adult coloring was my next adventure, and a very enjoyable one. I had loved to color as a child. We always had lots of crayons and paints, because my dad was the color chemist for the company that made Crayola crayons. With coloring, I can pick up a page that I started working on months ago or one I began yesterday. There’s no issue having multiple pictures in progress or putting one aside if you’re just not into it.

A little more than a year ago, I decided to try diamond painting, after seeing kits advertised online. I was immediately hooked. It’s an easy craft, but the results are tangible. It’s an inexpensive hobby, too, except that there are so many tantalizing kits available. I don’t rush through to completion; I enjoy the process. I work at a desk in our guest room, play classical music in the background, and it’s almost like a meditation. My current project is a cat picture, which will be a Christmas gift for our granddaughter.

So now you know something more about me 😄

I’ve never heard of diamond painting. Which medium do you find to be most relaxing?

Hi! I actually find the diamond painting the most relaxing. It requires focus, so my brain isn’t going in a million directions while I’m doing it. I know some people do it while they watch tv, but I like taking the quiet time away from anything else. I do limit myself, an hour a day, max. It’s an easy and inexpensive craft; I think I paid less than $10 for my first kit (from Amazon) and the tools you need come with each kit. The only thing extra I bought was a container for the beads.
