Any day when I can spend time in nature is a good day, and spending the morning at Green Cay Nature Center with friends made it a great one. I posted pictures that I took on a walk through the wetlands about a year ago. But every visit brings new sights to share.

We started out on the 1.5 mile boardwalk trail, and didn’t initially see much wildlife. I put that down to being later in the morning than if Ken and I were visiting on our own; we’re definitely morning people. The farther we walked, though, the more there was to see.

While there weren’t as many birds visible as there have been on some of our visits, we could definitely hear them. And we still saw plenty.

While we’ve seen turtles at Green Cay before, we’ve never seen as many as we did today. They were definitely enjoying the sun.

We took Luke, our grandson, to Green Cay when he was about 4 years old, and someone pointed out a nest of young alligators, all less than a foot long. That does not describe the gator we saw today! Only his head was above water, so it was hard to tell exactly how big he was, but, as Ken said, I’m glad he was down in the water and we were up on the boardwalk.

Look closely!

It was a lovely way to spend the morning. As the weather gets hotter, there will be fewer birds, and the heat and mosquitoes mean that summer really isn’t a time to return. But once summer passes, we’ll be back !

Nice! Wildlife comes with many surprises, especially in times like this. I really like this kind of scenery.

The herons look so beautiful, but I like the anhinga more.

Fun fact: Ubuntu 8.04 used a heron as a mascot, thus the codename “Hardy Heron”, and this means that a heron is able to overcome difficult conditions.
