I went to Mounts Botanical Garden, where I volunteer, for the first time since my surgery. I would normally be in the garden, guiding tour groups, two or three times a month during the winter and spring. I obviously haven’t been able to do that for a while. Next week, I’ll be taking a group of friends from our church on a tour, which will be a nice way to ease back into normalcy.

Many of the tropical and subtropical plants didn’t fare too well in the cold weather we had last month. Many trees, like the cacao pictured above, have lost most of their foliage. But it was an opportunity to look at the varied form, or “architecture,” of the different trees. Maybe that will be one of the themes for next week’s tour.

There was still plenty of color to enjoy.

The butterfly garden was busy.

I got to the garden shortly after it opened, so it was a quiet visit. There was a nice breeze, so I stood for several minutes, listening to the bamboo sing in the breeze. And before I left, I took a moment to sit at my favorite secluded spot by the lake, and watched the koi swim by. It was really a delightful morning!
