
The bougainvillea are in bloom right now, and there is this beautiful bank of plants along one of our regular walking routes. It’s very wild: untrimmed and growing up into the tree. So many bougainvillea plantings are of just one hue, but I love the riot of colors here. My favorite is the pink-tinged white blossoms.

The salmon blooms are a close second.

Botany lesson for the day: the small, white center is the actual bougainvillea flower. The colored structures are bracts, a type of modified leaf. The colorful bracts help attract pollinators, so they serve an important function. And here ends the lesson for today 😊
