Visiting the Mouse, and Other Animals

I promise that I will get back to posting recipes, but we’ve made a short visit to Disney World, and it has turned out to be one of our best trips to the Happiest Place on Earth.

Animal Kingdom’s “tree of life”

Our modus operandi for our last few trips has been to book a two- night stay, visit Disney Springs the day we arrive, and then spend the next day in one of the parks. We chose Animal Kingdom this time, and we realized that this was the first time we’d been here just the two of us.

The best part of Animal Kingdom is the animals, and we saw a lot of them. It had been a long time since our last visit, and we’d forgotten just how many places there are to view wildlife.

Most of the flamingos were still asleep

I think everyone’s favorite attraction is the safari ride. We saw hippos, rhinos, lions, giraffes, and ostrich who decided to sashay down the track ahead of our truck, and a variety of other species.

Munch, munch
You weren’t in a hurry, were you?

There are also two walk-through wildlife areas, one with African animals and another with those from Asia. This was our chance to see tigers (who we viewed through glass, so my pictures aren’t great) and great apes.

Who’s watching whom?

Ken and I both enjoyed the bird habitats in the wildlife treks. We learned that the African spoonbill’s plumage is white, rather than pink.

I don’t know the names of these birds, but I was amazed by the colors and variety.

We enjoyed other attractions in the park, too. Although I’ve seen it numerous times, the Festival of the Lion King show is always entertaining, and the Finding Nemo show is a mini-musical. We also explored Pandora, Disney’s recreation of the world of the Avatar movie. The fantastical landscape is definitely eye-catching.

It really was a fun, if exhausting, day. We certainly got our exercise; my Apple Watch tells me I’ve walked over 14,000 steps. And the weather was perfect. A front came through Orlando yesterday — unfortunately, while we were at Disney Springs. We hadn’t planned on purchasing ponchos, but we needed them when the heavens opened. Before the rain started, Ken bought me an early birthday present at Chapel Hats, plus we had a nice dinner at House of Blues, so it was still a good day.

Heading home tomorrow. New recipes to follow 🙂
