Tough Choices

What’s your all-time favorite album?

Choosing a favorite album is one of those “choose your favorite child” questions. It’s impossible! So I’m listing not one, but two of my favorites.

I’m dating myself, but Carole King’s Tapestry has always had a special place in my heart. There’s not a song on the album that I don’t love. This is the soundtrack of college, getting married, graduate school. Ken and I had this on vinyl and basically wore it out.

But, with a degree in music history and literature, I have listened to a lot of classical music. I’ve never owned many classical albums, but I absolutely had to own Snowflakes Are Dancing by Tomita. Isao Tomita was an electronic music pioneer. The music on Snowflakes is all inspired by Debussy compositions. Tomita created beautifully evocative arrangements, and the album was nominated for several Grammys. His interpretations of The Girl With the Flaxen Hair and The Sunken Cathedral are genius. I think an Impressionist such as Debussy would approve. It’s another album I wore out.
