Hiking Time

We hiked to Duke’s Creek Falls this morning. It was such a beautiful hike that it deserves its own post.

The falls are within in the Chattahoochee National Forest, so the trail is well maintained. It’s rated as a moderate, in-and-out trail, a little more than two miles round trip. The trail descends into the river gorge through a series of cutbacks, with stairs and boardwalks at places on the upper trail. Aside from some places where you need to watch your footing, the walk to the falls isn’t difficult.

The falls themselves are spectacular. You can hear running water most of the time that you’re on the trail, but the power is truly awe-inspiring. Ken and I sat on a bench on one of the viewing platforms and just drank in the beautiful scene.

Of course, once we finally brought ourselves to leave the falls, we had to ascend the same trail we had just descended. Living in South Florida, there’s just no way to prepare for this! We took it slowly, with several stops, which gave me a chance to take pictures along the trail. As we climbed, we got a better view of the cascades farther down the river, too.

We couldn’t have chosen a more perfect day, sunny and not too hot. This is why we come to the mountains.

If you need a little Zen in your day, perhaps this video will do the trick.
