Describe the most ambitious DIY project you’ve ever taken on.
When we bought our home, it had a screened patio. In 2005, however, Hurricane Wilma decided to begin a deconstruction project by tearing out much of the screening and crunching a couple of the supports. Rather than repair the damage, we decided that we preferred an open air patio. Ken bought a crow bar and removed the rest of the screens and frame.
But what to do then? We added some shrubs, but decided that we wanted some fencing. And we decided to do it ourselves!

It became a family DIY project. Ben came home for a long weekend to help us cement in the posts. Measuring and cutting the sections, attaching them to the posts, etc., took two full days. The gate section was out of stock at the store, so we had to wait a week until it came and we could install it.

Once we finished hanging the gate, we realized that, even though we thought we were being very careful with measuring to keep the sections even, we hadn’t done as good a job as we thought. If you look carefully at the picture, you’ll see that the section to the right of the gate is lower that the gate and the section to the left. Oh, well, it was too late at that point. Other than that, we were really happy with how it turned out, but exhausted and glad the project was done.
