Sports Crazy

What are your favorite sports to watch and play?

I love watching sports and supporting “my” teams. I wrote about how I first encountered American football in a post just the other day, so I’m not going to recount that again. We follow Penn State football because that’s where Ken got his undergraduate degree, and Ohio State because we both went there for graduate school. It can get interesting when they play each other 😄 And, as I said the other day, my NFL team is the Philadelphia Eagles, and we are getting ready for the Super Bowl. Fly, Eagles, fly!

The other sport I developed an early interest in was baseball. I remember coming home from school and my mother would be watching the World Series, back in the day when games were in the afternoon. Lots of summer evenings were spent with my dad pitching a ball and my brother and me trying to hit it. I was terrible, but it was great family fun.

The game that I have come to love is football, or what we here in America call soccer. I didn’t know anything about it until our son Ben started to play in a recreational league. Our entire family eventually got involved. When Alice started playing, I ended up coaching her team (we’re talking five year-old girls, this was not high powered sport) and becoming a referee, which I did for 17 seasons. And I was a pretty decent defender in pickup matches. I probably watch as many English Professional League matches as I do NFL games.

With the kids in my referee uniform many, many years ago!

There are other sports I watch—basketball, tennis, and now Ben has introduced me to cricket—but enough is enough:-)
