What colleges have you attended?

At one point in my educational journey, my dad called me a professional student. 🧑‍🎓 guess it seemed that way for a while. I hold three degrees from three different schools. In addition to those, I took courses from four other universities, although those were all online courses, so I’m not including them in this list. So I did spend my fair share of time in higher education.

My undergraduate degree is from Moravian College, now Moravian University, in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. I was a music major with voice as my major instrument. It was a small liberal arts college with pretty rigorous programs. My music classes were held in historically significant buildings that are now part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The study room used by the music students had a plaque on the wall noting that it had been a hospital during the Revolutionary War.

After earning my B.A. at Moravian, Ken and I moved to Columbus, Ohio to enroll in graduate school at the Ohio State University, where I earned my M.A. in music history and literature. I did coursework towards a doctorate, but, as Ken finished his Ph.D. and accepted a position with the University of Florida, I left my program. It wasn’t a difficult decision; I was watching friends finish their doctoral degrees and not be able to find a job. I knew that there were other things I could do.

Once in Florida, I applied to a program at University of Miami called the graduate program in management studies. This was an intensive ten week summer program designed for students whose undergraduate degrees were in something other than business. Successful completion of the program put me into the M.B.A. degree track. My original goal was a job in arts management, but I went on as many interviews as I could, and ended up taking a job in banking. It wasn’t what I ultimately wanted to do, but that detour taught me a lot. I had excellent experiences at all three schools. No education is ever wasted.

True. No education is ever wasted. You’ll find it all useful in one way or the other.

Oh, it definitely has been. At this point in my life, I’m retired from teaching choral music and maintaining a private voice studio. In other posts, I’ve written about specific learning experiences.

I’m a UF grad! Great place, I enjoyed my time there among all the natural springs and beauty.

In your “The Gift of Being There” post, I thought that pic looked very Florida-esque 😉

Although Ken was on the UF faculty, he was never on the Gainesville campus. He’s a plant pathologist, and originally was at the agricultural research center in Homestead, and then on the faculty at the Belle Glade research station. I would have loved to have lived in Gainesville, but we’ve been happy in Palm Beach County for 35 years now. And yes, I took that picture yesterday at Juno Beach, where we walked a couple miles on the beach.
