Close to My Heart

Who are your favorite artists?

I’m taking a different approach to this question. I could start listing singers, instrumentalists, performing groups, visual artists, dancers, and on and on. But I’m not.

So who are my favorite artists? The incredibly talented band that I get to sing with each week. With the exception of our pianist/music director, they’re all volunteers, but oh, my can they play!

Pat is our pianist, and he also plays trumpet professionally. He’s not bad on guitar, either. With a degree in jazz studies, he’s a font of jazz knowledge, and his improvisations are masterful.

It’s a real privilege to work with Larry, our guitarist, who can play literally everything. Some of my favorite musical moments have been singing with just his guitar accompaniment. A phenomenal soloist, he’s absolutely unselfish when playing with our group.

Unfortunately, I can’t find a picture of our bass player, Karl. In addition to his stand-up bass, Karl has made several electric basses to get just the sound he wants.

And then there’s my favorite drummer, my husband Ken. He puts so much heart and devotion into his playing. He holds us all together.

Making music is always fun, but doing it with friends who are the best artists I know makes it special!
